How to Deal With FOMO (While Drinking Responsibly)

Did you ever drink more alcohol than you wanted because of FOMO (fear of missing out)? That could look like:

A buddy said “c’mon just have one more drink”

You felt pressured to drink to fit in with peers

You thought you’d be left out if you didn’t drink

Even when the pressure to drink is high, remember there are ways to stick to your drinking limit or choose to not drink while still having a good time. Own your limits without missing out using the following tips:

Think: When you model responsible drinking and support others doing the same, you show peers your drive to show up for yourself (health and finances included) – it doesn’t go unnoticed!
  • Swap in non-alcoholic beverages. If your buddies insist on another round of beers, have no fear – sip a nonalcoholic drink instead (think: seltzer water, soda or nonalcoholic beer). Drinking something alcohol-free can help you feel like part of the group while sticking to your responsible drinking plan.
  • Rally the squad for a new activity. Having a few drinks after duty may help burn off steam, but spending time with friends outside of the bar can be just as fulfilling. Activities without the pressure to drink such as playing laser tag or seeing a movie are some of the many ways to have fun without alcohol while also bonding with buddies.
  • Create a gameplan (before the drinking starts). If you know your buddies might try to push your drinking limits, offer to be the designated driver or just explain that you’re calling it early tonight (and staying strong in your decision!).That way you can still go out without the pressure to overdo it.
  • Embrace self-control. It’s easy to say you’re just going to have one or two drinks, but the real challenge is hitting pause when others around you are still drinking. If you know you’re easily influenced by others, make the decision to say no to another drink or choose to take the night off and stay home. If you think you’ll thank yourself tomorrow, then it’s likely the best move!

Remember, there are lots of ways to join in the fun with your friends while still owning your limit. Check out more responsible drinking tips.
