Parent-Child Conversations about Alcohol

Talking to Children about Alcohol

Having open and honest conversations with children about alcohol is crucial to help them understand the risks of alcohol use – and misuse – and make informed decisions in their lives. Here are some tips for parents and guardians to help have meaningful conversations with children about drinking alcohol:

  • Start Early: Begin discussing alcohol with your children at an early age and continue having the conversations as they grow up. It is never too early to provide age-appropriate information about alcohol. As children mature, have more detailed conversations with them about the effects of alcohol, avoiding peer pressure to drink, and drinking responsibly, if they choose to drink at all.
  • Be a Good Role Model: Be an example to children through your actions on how to drink responsibly or, alternatively, choosing not to drink alcohol at all.
  • Set Clear Expectations: Make sure your children understand what is expected of them regarding alcohol use. Be clear about your own values and the consequences of underage drinking.
  • Listen and Encourage Questions: Encourage your children to share their thoughts and questions about alcohol. Listen without interruption and provide honest answers.
  • Discuss the Risks: Talk about the short-term and long-term effects of alcohol use, including its impact on physical and mental health, safety and personal relationships.
  • Help Kids Say No: Help your children develop strategies for saying no to alcohol such as suggesting alternate activities. Another Tactic would be to explain that it is against their religious, familial or personal beliefs. Peer pressure can be difficult to overcome, so ensuring your children are prepared is key to their success.
  • Stay Involved: Know where your children are, who they’re with and what they’re doing. Encourage them to participate in alcohol-free activities.
